North American Migration Count

The North American Migration count is held on the second Saturday each May; this year that date is May 8, 1999. Volunteers are mobilized to count birds on this day in order to provide a "snapshot of migration." These data will be available on the WWW soon; the site is still under construction but you can look at the work in progress by clicking here. For more information on International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) click here.

In 1998 174 volunteer counters censused 23 Kansas counties, and found 106,923 birds during the NAMC. Since the NAMC was initiated in KS in 1993, we have had counts in the following counties (although not in all counties in all years):

Barber, Barton, Cherokee, Crawford, Douglas, Finney, Ford, Geary, Greenwood, Greeley, Hamilton, Harvey, Hodgeman, Jefferson, Kearney, Kiowa, Labette, Leavenworth, Linn, Lyon, Logan, McPherson, Morris, Montgomery, Morton, Neosho, Pottawatomie, Reno, Riley, Saline, Scott, Sedgwick, Shawnee, Sherman, Stafford, and Washington

Data files for Kansas NAMCs for the years 1993-1998 are available as well. There is an updated summary table, as well as archived (pkzipped) Lotus 1-2-3 worksheets (.wk1), identical to those sent to the national NAMC coordinator, Jim Stasz. To obtain one of these, simply click on the links below.

This year we would like to cover all of these counties and more, if possible. A map and list of county coordinators, with addresses and phone numbers, is available here; please check it to see if your favorite county is being censused this year. If you want to be a county coordinator, please contact the state Coordinator, Dave Rintoul, either by e-mail at drintoul@ksu.edu, by phone (785-532-6663 days), or by snail mail at Biology Division, KSU, Manhattan KS 66506-4901. If you have any other questions about this event, please do not hesitate to ask. Thanks.

In order to make it more convenient for you to participate in the 1999 NAMC (Saturday, May 8), we have created some more resources here. You can download the 1999 edition of the KS NAMC newsletter (239 KB), or the NAMC checklist form(24 KB).

Both of these are .PDF files; you will need Adobe's free Acrobat reader software to view and print these files. Just click on that Adobe link and follow the simple instructions to download and install Acrobat for ANY computer system (Mac, Windows 3.1, Win 95, Windows NT 4.0 etc.). Other bird monitoring information can be found here.
